Although many people have never even heard of Kombucha, this ancient elixir has been around for thousands of years. Originating in China around 221 BC, Kombucha was known as "The Tea of Immortality." While it may not lead to a never ending life, there are a massive number of benefits to drinking Kombucha tea regularly.
Kombucha is a fermented tea made by brewing tea, mixing in sugar, and adding a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). This allows the good bacteria and yeast to grow by consuming the sugar and results in a tea that is high in antioxidants, probiotics, healthy acids and enzymes among other things.
The benefits of Kombucha include boosting of the immune system through antioxidants, detoxification of the liver and body, glucosamines to aid in decreasing joint pain, probiotics to improve digestive function and gut health, and increased energy from B-vitamins and caffeine from tea.
While Kombucha can be bought at many grocery stores and coffee shops these days for ~$3-4 per 16oz bottle, it is very cheap and easy to make at home. As I write this blog post i'm drinking a bottle of my own home-brewed Kombucha!
I highly recommend watching this instructional video on-home brewing Kombucha here. Whether you decide to take the plunge into home-brewing Kombucha or purchasing it at a store, give Kombucha a try and your body will thank you!
